Home Care Cottages Provide an Independent Living Solution
An alternative to Assisted Living for the handicapped and elderly
/EINPresswire.com/Petaluma, CA - July 12, 2011 -- Increasing numbers of elderly and handicapped people are facing the need for home care, and economic conditions require affordable solutions. A company in Petaluma, California, Little House on the Trailer, is designing and building recreational trailers that are optimized for use as Home Care Cottages.
These 400 square foot Little Houses on wheels allow families to care for their loved ones close to home, providing a separate dwelling for either the caregiver or the person being cared for. The separate living space that a Home Care Cottage provides gives both the caregiver and the person being cared for a much appreciated place to call their own. Their cost (about $65,000) compares to the cost of one year of assisted living in California.
These houses are unique in that they are built like a conventional house, and have the charm and comfort of a traditionally built home. Each Little House is designed and built to order, often copying the design of the main house to which it will be an accessory.
The 400 square foot "Home Care Cottage", is a complete one bedroom Little House on wheels. It can be built to suit either the Caregiver (The Caregiver Model) or the person cared for. (The Independent Living Model)
The Caregiver Model has a private bedroom with a nine foot closet, a full bath with shower stall, a washer dryer, a full size galley kitchen, living and dining areas and a storage or sleeping loft. The design of this model can be modified to suit the client.
The Independent Living model is arranged to be handicapped accessible. It features a bathroom with wheelchair access, high-rise toilet with grab bars, ADA approved sink, and a variety of bathing options. Accessible guidelines are followed throughout, including three feet wide doorways, wheelchair turning allowance, lowered kitchen counter height and accessible location of electrical switches and outlets. The design of this model can also be modified to suit the client.
Sonoma County, California permits the use of Recreational Trailers to house home health care givers, or those who are being cared for. The permits are available for locations in unincorporated (outside city limit) areas of the county with permit fees ranging from $500 to $1000. Mendocino County, California has similar provisions, and other counties and municipalities are considering permitting this use.
A Home Care Cottage is connected to the utilities of the main house according to local codes. A confidential note from a doctor confirming the need for Home Care is required, though doctor/client confidentiality assures that the specific nature of the medical need is not disclosed.
The Little House on the Trailer display yard is located at 1840 Petaluma Blvd North in Petaluma, California. The proprietor, Stephen Marshall, can answer specific questions about your project.
