NFC Foundation Announces Grant Recipients

MINNEAPOLIS, Jun 27, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

The NFC Foundation, a Nash Finch Company (Nasdaq: NAFC) charitable organization, today announced recent grants made totaling $80,000. The NFC Foundation provides funding to selected nonprofits within Nash Finch's geographic operating areas, with hunger relief and shelter as the central focus.

The organizations that received recent grants were:

  • Bridge for Youth - Since 1970, The Bridge for Youth has played a critical role as the Twin Cities access point for youth and families in need. The Bridge works with over a thousand youth and their families each year, offering a full continuum of services from hotline and emergency services, to longer term housing, as well as life skills and career development. The Bridge for Youth has been an NFC Foundation grant recipient since 2004. The grant of $20,000 helps ensure that these vital services to youth and families in crisis continue.
  • Keystone Community Services - Keystone Community Services is a community-based human service organization in St. Paul, Minnesota, offering a variety of human service programs for all ages at multiple sites. Programs include three food shelves and emergency assistance; a comprehensive Seniors Program that provides Meals on Wheels, peer counseling and programs for active seniors; case management for seniors, the disabled and at-risk families; and a support program for Hmong youth and their families. A grant recipient since 2009, the NFC Foundation grant of $20,000 provides general operating support for the programs at Keystone.
  • Perspectives Family Center - A grant recipient since 2006, Perspectives, Inc. is a multi-service agency whose award-winning prevention, intervention, and recovery programs span over three decades. Perspectives' target population is vulnerable, at-risk families and children whose lives have been derailed because of addiction, homelessness, or mental illness. A $20,000 grant from the NFC Foundation will be used to ensure the valuable programs offered by Perspectives, Inc. continue to impact lives through their family center and supportive housing programs.
  • Sojourner Project - Sojourner's Mission is to provide safe shelter for women and children, as well as advocacy and education for individuals and communities victimized by domestic violence. In their second year as a recipient, a grant of $20,000 assists Sojourner in accomplishing this mission.

"The number of people we are serving in our shelter and through our program continues to increase; their problems grow ever more complex, and we face the continual threat of cuts in funding," commented Helen Chargo, Executive Director, Sojourner Project. "This generous grant from the NFC Foundation assists us in continuing the important work of Sojourner Project in overcoming violence and abuse."

"These grants illustrate our continued commitment to helping the hungry and those in need of shelter in our community," concluded Brian Numainville, Chair of the NFC Foundation. "In addition, volunteering also makes a significant difference in helping nonprofits accomplish their goals. Nash Finch recently organized Helping Hands in the Community Day, resulting in more than 300 Nash Finch associate volunteers donating 1,600 hours of service time, to 17 nonprofits, all in one day."
