ST. John The Evangelist School Opens Peaceful Playground
/EINPresswire.com/ SCHENECTADY NY, JUNE 15, 2011 -- St. John the Evangelist School will unveil the area's first Peaceful Playground on Saturday, June 18, from 9:00 AM to 12 Noon during a school-wide open house celebration. The press is invited to see this innovative new playground concept and tour St. John's, a values-based school for children Nursery through 6th Grade.
"St. John's curriculum emphasizes fitness, motor skill development and cooperative play," said school principal Marie Keenan, "and the Peaceful Playground will be an exciting asset to our school and community."
St. John's K-6 curriculum consistently outperforms other schools by New York State academic standards, stressing scholastic achievement and strong Christian values.
The playground was funded through Schenectady County Public Health Services, which coordinates the Strategic Alliance for Health. The Schenectady County Strategic Alliance for Health is a Center for Disease Control and Prevention grant that has given out over $175,000 in grant awards to increase physical activity, improve nutrition and reduce tobacco use and exposure. Three Peaceful Playgrounds grants were given out, of which St. John's will be the first to open.
"We are thrilled to be recipients of the grant," said Keenan. "It gives our playground a cheerful look of an amusement park!"The innovative playground concept, developed by award-winning educator Dr. Melinda Bossenmeyer, is a system of fun and educational activities painted onto a schoolyard surface. The program has been proven to reduce bullying, increase physical activity and dramatically reduce injuries through dozens of activities including hopscotch, four square, basketball, and handball.
"This project exemplifies efforts that everyone can take nationwide to transform schools and playgrounds for children," said Dr. Bossenmeyer.
