Texas Voluntary Retirements Increase by 45% in 2010
For the third consecutive year, voluntary retirements in Texas exceeded the amount retired to meet the state renewable portfolio standard (RPS), according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). In 2010, 11.83 million megawatt-hours (MWh) were retired in the Texas voluntary market, a 45% increase over 2009's record of 8.94 million MWh. In 2010, 9.03 million MWh were retired in order to meet the state's RPS, compared to 6.79 million MWh in 2009.
In terms of generation, Texas posted a 30% increase in energy generated by renewable sources in 2010. The state's renewable energy certificate program recorded 28 million MWh in 2010, compared to 21.6 million MWh in 2009. Wind generation represented the largest share of generation, at 26.8 million MWh, while solar experienced the largest percentage increase (over 220%), increasing from 4,492 to 14,449 MWh.
