Statement Outlines PotashCorp's Commitment to First Nations and Metis Communites

Recognizing the growing importance of building strong relationships with Aboriginal communities, the PotashCorp Board of Directors has issued a Statement of Commitments to the First Nations and Métis people of Saskatchewan.

“First Nations and Métis people are a vital part of Saskatchewan’s culture and population, and they will play an increasingly important role in the future of our company and province,” says PotashCorp board member Keith Martell, who also serves as Chairman and CEO of First Nations Bank of Canada. “This commitment is a first step to strengthening our relationship with these important communities.”

According to a study by Aboriginal Consulting Services, First Nations and Métis people account for 15 percent of Saskatchewan’s population – a density nearly four times higher than the rest of Canada. The population is also young and expanding: At an average age of 22 – a little more than half the general population of the province – concentrations of First Nations and Métis people have grown 28 percent since 1996.

The statement includes three objectives: to raise awareness about PotashCorp career and supplier opportunities within Aboriginal communities, to educate people to take advantage of these opportunities, and to prepare the company culture to include First Nations and Métis people.

“To be part of the global food solution, we need to build long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with the First Nations and Métis people – just as we do with all the people responsible for our success,” says CEO Bill Doyle. “We look forward to the finding ways to help both sides prosper.”
