Wind Turbine and Construction (Homebrew Wind)

Date: 5/9/2011 to 5/14/2011

Location: Stevens Point, WI

Source: Midwest Renewable Energy Association

9:00 am - 5:00 pm CT
This intensive, hands-on course gives students the opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of wind energy from the ground up. Daily theory lectures provide a basic understanding of the physics behind wind energy, electricity, alternator design, renewable energy system design, site evaluation, and the economics of small wind. In the shop students will start with raw materials (steel, copper, magnets, lumber, resins and wire) and fabricate at least one, 12-foot diameter, 1.5-kW wind turbine from scratch, including the low-rpm, three-phase alternator. Work involved will include cutting and welding steel, carving wooden blades, coil winding, resin casting, assembly and testing. Please see the Midwest Renewable Energy Association website for more information.
