AJC Outraged Over Moroccan Terrorist Attack

April 28, 2011 – Washington – AJC expressed its outrage and grief over today’s terrorist bombing in Marrakech, Morocco, which left 15 people dead and more than 20 wounded.

The explosion at the Restaurant Argana, a popular tourist stop in historic Djemma el-Fna square, recalled the series of bombings in Casablanca in May 2003 that killed 33 people. Foreign nationals were reported to have constituted the bulk of the Marrakech casualties. A Jewish couple from Shanghai was reported among the dead.

“As friends of Morocco, a country that celebrates pluralism and has been a partner of the United States in the fight against terrorism, AJC is outraged over today’s vicious attack in Marrakech,” said David Harris, AJC Executive Director.

“We mourn today’s victims of this senseless act of terror, offer our condolences to their families in Morocco and abroad, and express our support for every appropriate step to bring those responsible to a swift and certain justice.”

AJC, marking its 105th anniversary in a three-day Global Forum this week in Washington, has established an international partnership with the Communauté Juive Marocaine, the country’s umbrella Jewish organization. Moroccan participants are among nationals of some 50 countries at this week’s conference, and the Moroccan Ambassador to the United States, as in the past, participated in the AJC Global Forum.
