Washington D.C. Recognized as Leading U.S. Green Power Community

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Washington D.C. as the nation's leading Green Power Community for collectively purchasing nearly 756 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, over 8 percent of the community's total electricity use. The combined green power purchasing by residents and organizations within the District is enough electricity to power 65,000 average U.S. homes for a year.

District leaders initiated a Green Power Challenge to increase citywide green power purchases by 33 percent before August 31, 2011. If the challenge is successful, the District's green power purchases will exceed 1 billion kWh annually and equal approximately 10 percent of the community's total electricity use.
