Bloom Energy Offers New Fuel Cell Procurement Model

Bloom Energy, the maker of 100-kilowatt solid oxide fuel cells, will begin providing customers with the option to purchase the electricity generated from its Bloom Energy Server instead of paying the upfront costs to purchase and own the systems, similar to financing arrangements used in the solar industry. Under the Bloom Electrons service, customers sign 10-year contracts for the electricity output of the fuel cells while Bloom Energy retains ownership of the systems and responsibility for their maintenance. In California, Bloom Energy is also providing customers with an option to buy directed biogas for their cells instead of relying on natural gas. Customers can also purchase directed biogas on their own, such as Adobe Systems did for its 1.2 megawatt fuel cell installation.
