State Veterinarian: Take Care to Protect Pets this Winter

January 27, 2010

LANSING – Michigan Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) State Veterinarian Dr. Steven Halstead reminds animal owners that Michigan law requires pets be provided proper food, water, shelter, and medical care, especially during the cold winter months.

“Considering the recent reports of animals suffering from cold-related injuries, pet owners must bear in mind dogs in outdoor kennels or on tethers may not be able to escape the wind and cold as their wild, free-ranging relatives can, so it’s our responsibility to assure their needs are met and they are protected,” said Halstead. “When the temperatures drop or severe weather is hitting, if you don’t have shelter or a means to keep the water from freezing, I would encourage you to bring your pets indoors for their safety and protection.”

Michigan’s economy may be a challenge to pet owners, and the cost and time to properly care for pets may be impacted.

“If Michigan residents find it difficult to take care of their pets, they should contact their local Humane Society, or county animal shelters,” said Halstead.

As a reminder, dogs, cats, and other companion animals that live inside homes may not tolerate outdoor winter temperatures for very long periods. Dogs and cats that live outside need dry, clean, enclosed spaces such as dog or cat houses that retain body heat. Other winter precautions for companion animals include ensuring:

• Access to clean water.
• Adequate feed.
• Good grooming.
• Protection from de-icing chemicals, which can irritate skin.
• Protection from anti-freeze, which tastes sweet to animals, but is extremely toxic.
