AJC Applauds New U.S. Sanctions Against Iranian Nuclear Program
December 22, 2010 – New York – AJC welcomed the United States Treasury Department’s announcement that it is imposing fresh sanctions against the Iranian regime, targeting companies linked to the widely-feared Revolutionary Guard.
“The U.S. government is sending Iran an unmistakable message: comply with legally-binding UN resolutions over your nuclear activities or face the consequences,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris. “Coming a fortnight after Iranian intransigence derailed a new round of negotiations in Geneva, this is a timely message.”
The Treasury Department, which has worked tirelessly to penalize Iran for its nuclear-weapons ambitions, designated a foundation associated with the Revolutionary Guard, as well as the Ansar and Mehr banks and the Moallem insurance company, which is tied to Iran’s national shipping line.
The new measures were unveiled as the Iranian regime announced it was cutting subsidies for fuel and vital food supplies. Police and security forces have been deployed in Tehran and other cities in anticipation of popular unrest.
“These preemptive actions show that the Iranian regime fears its own people,” said Harris. “Ayatollah Khamenei, President Ahmadinejad and their cronies offer the people of Iran nothing but poverty and isolation.”
