The National Renewable Energy Laboratory published the Oahu Wind Integration and Transmission Study (OWITS) (PDF 1.8 MB) Download Adobe Reader, which includes several smaller studies and was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy; the Hawaiian Electric Company; and the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism. OWITS examines "Big Wind" energy from Molokai and Lanai that will be brought to Oahu to meet the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative's mandate for Hawaii to generate 40% of its energy from renewable resources by 2030.
