AJC Stands with Israel as Devastating Fire Engulfs North

December 2, 2010 – New York – AJC expressed solidarity with the people of Israel as they battle a massive forest fire raging across the north of their country.

“We extend our condolences to the families of the dead, pray for the wounded, and mourn the devastating destruction wrought on the Carmel Mountain range,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris.

The fire, called the worst natural disaster in Israeli history, has claimed at least 40 lives, caused extensive damage and forced the evacuation of several communities outside Haifa.

In response to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s appeal to the U.S. and European countries, several have dispatched fire-fighting equipment and personnel to help.

“True friends are revealed and tested in moments of crisis,” said Harris. “AJC deeply appreciates the rapid response of Cyprus, Greece, Spain and others in helping Israel deal with this disaster and humanitarian crisis."
