Key Vote Alert: Extend All Current Tax Rates

Dear Member of Congress,

On behalf of more than 1.5 million Americans for Prosperity (AFP) activists in all 50 states, I urge you to defend the American people from the enormous tax hike that looms on January 1. The economy is still recovering and both individuals and businesses are desperate for some level of certainty. The Obama administration and Democrat-controlled Congress have unleashed an onslaught of new regulations on health care, financial services and energy. Congress must ensure that taxes are one area where individuals and businesses can plan for the future.

I urge you to vote No on any proposal that would allow damaging tax hikes on job creators and I urge you to vote Yes on any proposal to extend all current tax rates for all Americans.
AFP will rate both of these votes in our congressional ratings.

Democratic Party leaders are planning to decouple the expiring tax rates. They will attempt to offer a vote to extend the current rates only for taxpayers earning under an as-of-yet undetermined threshold. This would result in a tax increase for the remaining individuals and businesses in the country. This strategy is very dangerous and risks a further contraction of investment capital at a time when we should be encouraging broader investment.

A better approach is to extend all of the current tax rates. While the country is still gathering itself to emerge from the recession, Congress should ensure that no American—individual or business—sees their taxes increase. The private sector is struggling to keep its doors open and employees at work, hiking rates at this time would do damage to that effort.

I urge you to reject the decoupling strategy and vote to extend all of the current tax rates for all taxpayers. AFP will rate both of these votes in our congressional ratings.

Sincerely,

James Valvo
Director of Government Affairs
Americans for Prosperity
