Beverage Industry Big Winner in State Elections

Nov. 3, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ -- It may have been a big day for Republicans, but the beverage industry also won big in a number of local contests.

Dallas voters lifted a 100-year-old ban on the sale of beer and wine and will open that major market to citywide sales. Voters also dumped an archaic rule requiring membership before patrons could purchase alcohol.

In Arkansas, three counties shifted from dry to wet, and in Massachusetts, voters ended a year-old tax on store-bought alcohol. The vote against the Massachusetts alcohol tax will cost the state about $110 million in 201l.

The beverage industry had fought hard against the legalization of marijuana in California, considering the measure a threat to beverage sales. Voters rejected the controversial proposal.
