It is unclear whether it is the water or the rarefied air but something in the Washington D.C. atmosphere corrupts absolutely.

The National Rifle Association, popularly known as the “NRA”, built a reputation as almost infallible in Congressional elections. When they supported you victory was almost certain and, when they opposed you, alternative employment was usually your next career move. This year NRA staff members appeared to shove their commitment to the Second Amendment aside in favor of other interests. The NRA endorsed and is supporting over five dozen Democrats who are now running for re-election to Congress. All of the 61 Democrats NRA endorsed voted for Nancy Pelosi to become Speaker. Many are the very Democrats who must now be replaced with Republicans in order to fire Speaker Nancy Pelosi and replace her with a pro-2nd amendment leader.

None-the-less, the current leadership of the NRA has declared war on the Republican Party. They are systematically trying to keep the GOP from winning enough seats to gain control of the House and NRA’s Senate endorsement of two Senate Democrats may be equally problematic.

The Republican Party will have no choice in the months following the election. They must respond to NRA’s declaration of war with a battle plan of their own. Their response to the NRA political staff must be swift, sure and successful. There is no need to “take prisoners” since the NRA staffers made this very personal and rehab seems unlikely.

Business and financial lobbyists will watch this matter closely for hints about their own fortunes. Wall Street interests which have backed President Obama, Senator Schumer’s Democratic Campaign Committee and like entities will be especially alert to tips about future consequences for those who chose to stand with those who abhor free enterprise. Everyone will be watching for signals now that the “Tea Party” activists should mean the end of “business as usual.”

NRA politicos were state-of-the-art pros back in the day and they lived by Washington’s watchwords… “Yes, but what are you going to do for me tomorrow?” The senior staff understood that the basis of political power is the ability to influence the outcome of elections and their endorsement decisions reflected that reality.

This year they chose to endorse and support 61 Democratic House Members and 2 Senators. Many of these folks have only limited chances for survival while carrying their President, Pelosi support and the record of their Party on their backs. The NRA “aura of invincibility” will be shattered if, as expected, they loose many of those races.

The Political Prophet® predicts that some Republican leaders and contributors will deal with the current NRA political staff by aggressively shifting support to the rival group Gun Owners of America. In addition, many may take an active role in the election of the Board of Directors of the NRA and insist on Legislative Affairs staff changes as a part of the deal. The current NRA political staff has outsmarted itself because if they win, they loose and if they loose they loose. The only question is how aggressive does the staff replacement effort become. Those who declare open warfare on the folks who arguably “brought them to the dance” should not expect leniency.

The other unknown element at this time is whether or not these endorsements involved some form of quid pro quo based on NRA’s exemption from the Disclosure Act of 2010. If that proves to be the case, some of these staffers are likely to go to jail if the Republicans gain control of the House and thus have subpoena power in the next Congress.

The object lesson, boys and girls is that your true “friends” in politics are those who were with you yesterday AND who will be with you tomorrow. Those who have no tomorrow but who helped previously are the folks you invite to lunch so you can help with their job search.
