Sea Shepherd Galapagos Director Rewarded by Dutch Postcode Lottery
During the making of a TV show promoting the work of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in the Galapagos, Sea Shepherd Galapagos Director, Captain Alex Cornelissen, was presented with the Golden Banner. The Golden Banner is a reward from the Dutch Postcode Lottery for people who work to better our planet. It is accompanied by a check worth € 20,000, which can be used for any project in Galapagos at the discretion of the recipient.
Captain Cornelissen has been part of the Sea Shepherd team since July 2002 and participated in many international campaigns before taking on the job as Galapagos Director in 2007. The reward is a commendation for his work over the years.
We are very pleased for the recognition and are confident the TV show will clearly show the great work Sea Shepherd is doing in the Galapagos. The show is called Kanjers van goud, and it will air in The Netherlands in November 2010.
Captain Cornelissen commented that he accepted the reward on behalf of all the people working tirelessly for Sea Shepherd worldwide to protect our oceans. He is proud to be part of this team and stated that the commendation will further increase our collective dedication.
The Dutch Postcode Lottery has been sponsoring Sea Shepherd since 2008 with an annual donation of € 500,000. On top of this, in February 2010, the Lottery selected the Galapagos AIS project as one of its Special Projects and assigned additional funding to finance this.
Work on the AIS project is progressing, and the network should be online at the end of this year. Once operational, the inhabitants of the Galapagos Marine Reserve will be even better protected against illegal fishing and other harmful activities.
