FirstAlert(tm) Digest 8/25/10: Dell Declines To Support

- Technical Market Commentary -

August 25, 2010 (FinancialWire) (Go to http://www.financialwire.net/?s=cmmtry for all recent commentaries.) — Today’s FirstAlert(tm) features Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL), Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), the Financial Select Sector SPDRS ETF (AMEX: XLF), Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS), Precision Drilling Trust (NYSE: PDS), Sirona Dental Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRO) and more

Dell Declines To Support (By Frank Kollar) — Shares of Dell, Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) have been in a steep decline since reaching 2010 highs back in April. From a high at $17.52 per share, shares have fallen back to $11.59 as of the close on Tuesday, August 24, which is a 34 percent loss. The $11.33 level is the 61.8% retracement support level for the entire February 2009 to April 2010 advance. If it is broken to the downside, share prices have no further support until they reach $7.99, which was the February 23, 2009 closing low. This would be an additional 31 percent loss in share value.

We would not take a position in shares of Dell unless the downtrend is reversed, which would take a reversal and close above $14.00 per share — an unlikely event for the near term.

(Go to http://www.financialwire.net/2010/04/22/about-kollar/ for more about Mr. Kollar, and go to http://www.financialwire.net/?s=kllrfby+cmmtry for more of Kollar’s commentaries.)

Quote of the Day: "To achieve great things, two things are needed; a plan, and not quite enough time." — Leonard Bernstein.

Word of the Day: distrain \ dih-STREYN \, verb: 1. To seize the property of (a person) in order to compel payment of debts. 2. To levy a distress upon.

In context: "He would be thinking of her as a Fury coming to carry him off, or even as a tipstaff with warrant to distrain. Yet it was not she, but Love, that was the bailiff." — Samuel Beckett, Murphy.

(Distrain is ultimately a combination of two Latin roots, dis, "apart," and stringere, "to draw tight.")
