New Products: Trimble Offers Oil Spill Mobile App
July 7, 2010 (FinancialWire) — Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) has launched Map the Spill, a mobile application and website meant to be used by Gulf Coast residents and the public to report on the oil spill taking place there after the April explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil exploration platform.
According to Trimble, Map the Spill allows those directly and indirectly impacted by the spill to capture and chronicle what they see happening to the land, sea and wildlife in their areas.
The free app, which uses rich media and Global Positioning System technology, is currently available on Android and BlackBerry mobile phones and will be available soon on the iPhone, according to Trimble.
Trimble hopes that scientists, government agencies and non-governmental agencies that are taking part in clean-up efforts will use the data and content created and shared by Map the Spill users to assist in their efforts.
California-based Trimble applies technology used by field and mobile workers in businesses and government. The firm’s solutions are focused on applications requiring position or location—including surveying, construction, agriculture, fleet and asset management, public safety and mapping.
In addition to utilizing positioning technologies, such as GPS, lasers and optics, Trimble solutions may include software content specific to the needs of the user.
