Food & Beverage: Omega Protein Plans Shrimp Hull Processing Plant
June 28, 2010 (FinancialWire) — Omega Protein Corp. (NYSE: OME), a producer of Omega-3 fish oil and specialty fish meal products, said that it will build and operate a shrimp hull processing facility at its Moss Point, Mississippi facility.
The company plans to install and operate shrimp hull processing equipment and then process shrimp hulls at its facility into marine ingredients.
According to Omega, the shrimp hull raw material will be provided for no cost by Mississippi shrimp processors, who will be able to process those hulls at Omega Protein's facility without fees, rather than pay disposal fees to third-party landfills.
Construction on the project is scheduled to commence later in 2010 and the project is anticipated to be completed in 2011.
Texas-based Omega Protein is a manufacturer of fish oils containing Omega-3 fatty acids for human consumption, as well as specialty fish meals and fish oil used as ingredients in aquaculture, swine and other livestock feeds.
Omega Protein makes its products from menhaden, an Omega-3 rich fish that is not utilized as seafood, but which is available along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Coasts.
