Health Risk: Could 3-D TV’s cause lasting eye problems?

West Palm Beach, FL—As 3-D television and video games are quickly gaining popularity and a place in many consumers homes, some are becoming concerned that the new technology could be creating headaches, eye strain and other health problems, as reported by USA Today.
Samsung issued a health warning in April, which warned consumers that the 3-D action could cause light-headedness, nausea, twitching, dizziness and convulsions. Epileptics are especially predisposed to the illnesses. Consumers were further advised by Samsung to “take frequent breaks and to avoid watching 3-D movies or games when they’re in bad physical condition, sleep deprived or have been drinking alcohol."
A pediatric ophthalmologist at the University of Minnesota, Gail Summers says that because the 3-D technology is so new, there isn’t much research that shows 3-D viewing causes health problems. But Steven Nusinowitz, an associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of California-Los Angeles, stated about 20 percent of people have mild vision problems, which could make them more likely to suffer 3-D related headaches or eye strain.
A lack of depth perception or vision that weaker in one eye are also likely problems. Nusinowitz further stated that people could suffer from motion sickness while watching 3-D movies or playing 3-D video games.
Los Angeles ophthalmologist James Salz contends that although 3-D viewing can cause eye strain, which could cause headaches, permanent eye damage isn’t likely.
