Winningham joined Theravance, Inc. as CEO and a member of the board of directors in October 2001, and was appointed chairman of the board in April 2010. From 1997 to 2001 he served as president of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s oncology/immunology/oncology therapeutics network and also as president of global marketing from 2000 to 2001.

Over a fifteen-year period with Bristol-Myers Squibb, Winningham held various U.S. and global management positions.
