San Antonio, TX—A giant plume of black smoke could be seen lingering over San Antonio’s southeast side, following an explosion at a local refinery. Authorities reported that an 18-wheeler exploded as it was being loaded with fuel on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at 11:30 a.m., as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Officials stated that an 18-wheeler was loading up with fuel at AGE Refining when the truck suddenly exploded, which set off several other explosions. Emergency crews rushed to the refinery located in the 7800 block of South Presa near Southeast Military Drive, where they found one truck driver severely burned and other employees with minor injuries. The truck driver, who was not identified, was rushed to Brooke Army Medical Center for treatment of his burns. It was not reported if the other injured employees received medical attention as well.

Following the blast, all residents and people working within a half-mile radius of the refinery were told to evacuate. They were allowed to return between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m., on Wednesday.

Investigators are currently trying to pinpoint an exact cause of the original explosion.
