A Nuke World Order: 47 Nations Agree to Nuclear Pact

April 14, 2010 - At the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, President Barack Obama has secured the support of 47 nations to help keep the world's nuclear materials out of the reach of terrorists.

Within four years, the governments pledged - on a voluntary basis - to safeguard the nuclear materials they use in bombs, civilian reactors and nuclear plants in an effort to curb the threat of nuclear terrorism.

A follow-up meeting to gauge countries' progress is to be held in six months, and another summit in two years. However, doubts have been raised about the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) ability to help ensure nuclear security.
