PRESS DISPENSARY - Friday, Mar 26, 2010 - The connection between a London engraving specialist and one of the world's most important racing fixtures is rarely discussed, but of fundamental importance. For the newest trophy to grace Gold Cup day at Cheltenham 2010 last week - the GBP 57,000 Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle Race - is today being engraved with the winner's name by R. H. Wilkins (<a href="http://www.rhwilkins.co.uk">http://www.rhwilkins.co.uk</a> ), based in the Hatton Garden area of London. R.H. Wilkins also recently supplied and engraved the trophy itself, an impressive solid silver 13.5" round dish.
R.H. Wilkins - which has an important place in contemporary British sport, being also famous within its own circles as the engraver that adds the winning teams to the F.A. Cup - was commissioned earlier this month to supply the Cheltenham trophy in just one week, during which time a lifelike and highly energetic jumping horse scene was hand-engraved into the bowl of the dish (illustrated online).
"The finished article and its distinctive, hand engraved horse scene were extremely well received at Cheltenham last week," says MD Emmet Smith, "and we were commended by all concerned not only for the quality of the solid silver trophy but also for our ability to provide it, fully engraved, within a week of receiving the original order."
Mr Smith is now overseeing the addition (illustrated online) of the trophy's first winning horse, Berties Dream, and jockey, Andrew Lynch, before returning the trophy for its formal presentation to the race's champions.
Mr Smith continues, "Any company would be honoured to be asked to supply the trophy for such a prestigious event as the Cheltenham week and whilst we've been holding a steady hand for the engraving itself we've also been quite thrilled inside to be part of the event."
The trophy will be returned to the winner next week.
