Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (MesotheliomaCancerNews.com) -- Two Pennsylvania families who sued several manufacturers over the asbestos-related deaths of two of their loved ones were awarded a sum of $17 million. The parties held responsible for the deaths included John Crane, Inc. and Garlock Sealing Technologies. Each man suffered, and ultimately died, from malignant pleural mesothelioma, a rare but fatal form of cancer, which is almost always caused by asbestos exposure. John Crane, a producer of industrial equipment including seals, gaskets and packing material, agreed to a settlement prior to the announcement of the final verdict. That amount has not been disclosed. Garlock’s legal team didn’t give in as easily, arguing that their gaskets could not have been a factor in the mesothelioma diagnoses, despite the fact that the gaskets are made up of 90 percent asbestos. Further evidence that may have disproved their claim was a document that Garlock had tried to exclude from the trial (which was later allowed to be included as evidence) showed that the manufacturer had admitted its gaskets not only contained asbestos, but that they could cause mesothelioma and other related diseases.
