Lawyers say Cameron Douglas’ heroin addiction, emotional issues stem from ‘difficult upbringing’

Montreal, Quebec, Canada (CaymanMama.com) — Cameron Douglas, the troubled son of actor Michael Douglas, has long battled an addiction to heroin, landing him in the middle of legal drama for several years.

According to the NY Daily News, Douglas’ lawyers say that their client’s drug addictions and subsequent legal matters stem from a dysfunctional upbringing by his famous father. The lawyers argued, “Cameron Douglas never had a chance growing up in the shadow of a rich, powerful, jet-setting dad.”

Cameron, 31, has a severe heroin addiction and emotional struggles that can be attributed to the “notoriety that is not due to any acts of his own but by dint of birth and a difficult upbringing,” his defense lawyer Dan Gitner said.

Although Cameron’s lawyers made a strong defense, the judge refused bail during a hearing last week, meaning Cameron must now wait until April 14 for a new sentencing hearing. Cameron faces a 10-year sentence for dealing methamphetamine.

In a recent issue of Vanity Fair Magazine, Michael Douglas admitted that he poorly prioritized his life, putting his career over nurturing his son.
