United, US Airways Open to Mergers
February 24, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ In separate interviews with Reuters, the CFOs from United Airlines and US Airways said that the airlines would be open to mergers and that the industry needs to consolidate.
Kathryn Mikells of United said the airline was open to merging with US or foreign carriers, but Derek Kerr of US Airways said his company was only open to merging with another US carrier.
In 2008, sources told Reuters that the two companies had come close to merging with each other. United is the country's third-largest carrier; US Airways is in fifth position behind Delta, American, United and Continental.
