Genetic Testing Contributing to Eradication of Inherited Diseases
February 17, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Is biotechnology making hereditary diseases a thing of the past? According to a report by the AP, genetic testing has led to the decline and near eradication of a number of inherited diseases.
Or more accurately, the tests are helping couples decide whether or not to have children. The couples most at risk of passing on a disease are not conceiving children.
The report says that more women are terminating their pregnancies when diseases are detected in the fetus through genetic testing. It also mentions a California study that found that the number of babies with cystic fibrosis was halved because the affected children never came to term after discovery of the disease.
