NYC Soda Tax Could Raise $220 Million Annually
February 16, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ New Yorkers drink a lot of pop. According to the New York City Independent Budget Office, a one-cent-per-ounce soda tax could raise $221.7 million annually.
The office's report states that 400 million gallons of sugary drinks are consumed annually in the city.
The proposed tax in New York and Gov. David Paterson have come under fire from the American Beverage Association. The beverage lobbying group says that such a tax would not help curb obesity but would instead eliminate jobs.
