Shahaan Engineer: Motor Racing Champion in the making
Feb 15, 2010 (PRN): 2010 is proving to be a busy year for Dubai based junior karting ace Shahaan Engineer. The fourteen year old, who races with his helmet emblazoned with the Indian flag, has in a short span of time made a remarkable impact on the UAE motor racing scene through his karting exploits. Shahaan has become a dominant force in the local kart racing scene after spending an eventful rookie year contesting big events across Europe last year.
So much so that after Shahaan won round 5 of the RMC, highly respected FIA Vice President and ATCUAE President Mohammed Ben Sulayem recommended Shahaan to QI-Meritus.Mahara team principal Peter Thompson, when the team was out in the UAE to contest round 2 of the GP2 Asia series at Yas Marina.
As a result, a meeting was arranged between Thompson and Shahaan’s father, Sharokh Engineer, to discuss possibilities of testing and taking part in the Asian version of the highly touted Formula BMW championship.
“It was very flattering to receive a call from Peter Thompson who by all accounts runs one of the most professional racing outfits in Asia. Shahaan spent an exciting evening at Yas Marina doing pit stop tests in the GP2 car but for now, Shahaan is on a well planned agenda to elevate him from karting into single-seater racing. Nevertheless when he is ready, QI-Meritus.Mahara would be an option we would indeed consider.” Says Sharokh.
Shahaan’s training programme currently involves karting and training in manual gearbox road cars under the expert tuition of driver coach Michael Prophet along with single-seater formula car training. Simultaneous testing will also commence in the Le Mans style Radical race cars reinforced with trips to Europe where a number of testing opportunities are on offer.
Prophet who in the Aston Martin GT4 was the class winner of the recent 2010 Dunlop 24 Hours says, “Shahaan had never driven a manual gearbox car. The first time I took him I was amazed at the speed at which he adapted to the controls of the car. The kid has natural talent and collectively we are planning a path which will see him in single-seater racing at a time when most kids are still doing karting.”
With these objectives in mind “Team Shahaan” are investigating options in the world renown Auto Sport Academy by FFSA in France, the ultra-competitive British Formula Ford series, Formula BMW and Formula Renault in Europe, with the view to have Shahaan in a top team in a meaningful series by 2011.
Executive Manager of Dubai’s Kartdrome David Terrien, himself a former World Champion in karting and FIA GT Sportscars, “Shahaan Engineer has had an impressive and rapid rise through the ranks of karting. It is hard to believe he only made his track debut a couple of years ago. He has the potential to go very far and now it is crucial that the correct choices are made regarding the way forward in single-seater racing for him.”
Shahaan himself remains modest about his achievements and future plans. Final word goes to the young Indian ace, “I just want to drive and win”.
