Global Search Is On For Future Sustainability Leaders

The Centre for Sustainability Leadership's Fellowship Program seeks the sustainability leaders of the future: people with the passion and potential to create the change the world so desperately needs.

PRESS DISPENSARY - Wednesday, Dec 16, 2009 - Sydney, Australia - The Centre for Sustainability Leadership is looking for people with the passion and potential to create the change the world so desperately needs.

The Centre's acclaimed Fellowship Program has for the past five years produced more than 150 graduates working in business, law, science, engineering, health, government and arts - many of them awarded for their significant efforts towards sustainability.

"Our aim is to create sustainability leaders in every sector of society," said the Centre's founder and Executive Director Larissa Brown. She said the Centre's motto was simple: "We've tried to get people in positions of power to care; now we're going to get people who care into positions of influence."

The Fellowship Program equips emerging leaders with an unparalleled network of like-minded people, skills such as creative thinking and problem solving, effective influencing, relationship building, and media advocacy as well as in-depth knowledge of behavioural and social change. Participants graduate with the ability to make a real difference.

The course comprises weekly evening workshops, one-to-one coaching, intensive retreats, a mentoring program and project work.

The Centre is currently looking for participants to apply for the 2010 Fellowship Program run in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. Only 25 places are available in each city. Applicants from all over the world are welcome.

The program runs from April to November and scholarship places are available.

Further information can be found at www.csl.org.au. International applications close 3rd February 2010 and Australian applications 28th February 2010.

Notes for editors

The Fellowship Program has reputable sustainability leaders as guest speakers and mentors, including WWF Australia CEO Greg Bourne.

He said: "Environmental movements tend to have activist elements which are great to raise awareness, but don't actually move things forward. At the other end of spectrum you've got to have people who are working with those in positions of influence to find solutions. That is the only way we are going to create real change and it is a philosophy that I see strongly in the work of Centre for Sustainability Leadership."

Participants describe the Program as one of the best experiences of their lives:

Rachel Mimmo from Shropshire, England: "It has been a brilliant opportunity for me, meeting people who are passionate about climate change," she said. "I have learnt how to develop strategies and how to network with people from varied backgrounds." Together with two other Fellowship Program participants Rachel is organising a car rally where all entrants will be running on alternative fuels. Through the car rally, Rachel hopes to make people more aware of what is available as an alternative for petrol and diesel.

Jen Rae from Alberta, Canada: "The skills and insights I've learnt in the Program give me the potential to create new entrepreneurial opportunities, as well as practical tools and approaches toward social change for sustainability." Jen's art practice aims to establish behavioral change towards environmental sustainability via public art as a powerful tool.

Aaron Fuller from Sydney, Australia: "The Fellowship Program has changed my way of thinking," he said. In particular he has enjoyed the investment in learning, personal growth, the range of amazing reputable speakers, the mentor program and the coaching sessions. Besides running his own change agency, Shiftlock, he is currently working on a project to get rid of non-recycled toilet paper. Together with three other Fellowship Program participants, they hope to have rid Australia (and perhaps the world) of non-recycled toilet paper in five years.

Matt Perry from London, England: "The Program gave me a sense of independence and the confidence to act on turning my dream into reality." Matt is running his own sustainable advertising agency, Republic of Everyone, which only works with brands who want to make green, ethical and sustainable an everyday part of what they do. "It is about ultimately helping clients make better profits but then they have to be doing some kind of good elsewhere - environmentally, socially or ethically," Matt concludes.

Eyal Halamish from Chicago, Illinois: "I joined the Fellowship Program to network with people committed to creating change. I think the best part of the program was the opportunity to form relationships with leaders and mentors in the sustainability field. The program's mentorship and coaching challenged me to think about what I want to do and to get serious about realising my potential." Eyal is developing a web 2.0-based project that aims to enable the public to engage decision-makers in politics, business, and the community. The project will be piloted in Melbourne and then rolled out globally.

Erin Cini from Sydney, Australia: "I've been able to develop my confidence through the skills I've learned from the Fellowship Program, expanding my networks, listening to the inspirational people who presented us, and through the encouragement of my mentor." As a National Sustainability Coordinator with an engineering consultancy, Erin is developing processes and tools to incorporate sustainability, carbon assessment and climate change adaptation into their projects. In addition, Erin is working on a project that brings together emerging professionals to drive change and action on planning, decision making and constructing sustainable infrastructure.

The Centre for Sustainability Leadership and its Fellowship Program are supported by, among many others, EPA Victoria, the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (New South Wales) and the British Council.
