Florida building undergoes asbestos removal in preparation for demolition

In Gulf Breeze, Florida, the building known locally as the Tea Carte building has been slated for demolition. The aging structure previously contained asbestos, which has since been removed in preparation for the demolition.

The Tea Carte building was deemed unsafe and condemned by the Gulf Breeze City Council earlier this year. The building will come down no later than the 20th of this month, according to Mitchell Rice, Chief Executive Officer of RMC Property Group LLC.

According to Code Inspector Shane Carmichael, the preparation for the demolition process was delayed because of the asbestos removal needed prior to demolition. Asbestos exposure is conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before the first symptoms of mesothelioma become apparent.

The average patient who is diagnosed with mesothelioma is often told that they may only have two years left before the disease takes its course. This rare form of cancer affects less than 3,000 Americans each year. Chemo and other treatments can help some patients battle the disease.

“We are not talking about the historic Benson Building fronting Highway 98; this is the old Western Auto structure,” Carmichael said. “We have also advised them to finish up mowing and tidying up the area.” The Tea Carte building has been home to Western Auto, then to a shop known as Greenfields, and most recently the Tea Carte gift shop.

“There is no doubt that eventually it will all have to come down, and something consistent with… [new] guidelines will go in,” Carmichael said. “Right now we have prioritized taking down the unsafe structure.”
