December 15, 2009 (FinancialWire) — Atwood Oceanics, Inc. (NYSE: ATW) has named Robert J. Saltiel as president and chief executive officer. John R. Irwin, the company’s current president and chief executive officer, will retire from such positions as of the close of business December 14, but may continue as an employee of the company to July 31, 2010, to provide for an appropriate transition. Saltiel has been nominated for election to the company’s board of directors by the company’s shareholders at the annual meeting of shareholders to be held February 11, 2010.  Irwin will serve out his current term as a member of the company’s board of directors, but will not stand for reelection.

Saltiel was most recently executive vice president and chief operating officer of Transocean, having previously served as executive vice president of Performance and senior vice president of Transocean’s then North and South America Unit.
