A Call for Ideas to Create New Lifestyles using Mobile Devices under the Next-generation Communications Environment

Nov 9, 2009 (PRN): Mitsui Ventures, the venture investment arm of Mitsui & Co., and T-Gaia Corporation are to hold the 2nd i*deal competition (i*deal Competition 2010) with the support and cooperation of Sony Corporation and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. The competition calls on contestants to submit their plans for new business models and services, software applications and mobile technologies to operate under the next-generation, high-speed, mobile communications environment (3.9G–4G). This year the invitation is also being extended to entrants from the USA.

With developments such as the appearance of the iPhone and the Android mobile phone, the evolution of the Symbian OS to open source, the spread of the BlackBerry and the entrance of the OPhone we are seeing the emergence of a continuous stream of next-generation platforms for mobile devices as the communications environment grows ever faster. At the same time, the software development environment which allows outside developers to take advantage of this abundance of mobile device resources is also evolving rapidly. The goal of i*deal Competition 2010 is to discover hitherto unimagined ways of using the mobile devices which are emerging from this new age of innovation as a launch pad for their global deployment.

For this year’s competition we are inviting entries in the following three categories: (1) Business models and services; (2) Applications; (3) Technology. Contestants may submit entries in any of these categories and a shortlist of successful ideas will be selected in each category on the basis of novelty and future potential. The shortlisted entrants will be invited to present their plans for evaluation by a panel of judges at the Grand Finale to be held in March 2010 when the winning entry will be decided. The shortlisted entrants will be given the opportunity to benefit from the technological and commercial expertise of the judges and the organizers who will offer practical advice in these areas to support the entrants in their final presentation as they seek the potential commercialization of their ideas.

When a plan is deemed to be of particularly outstanding calibre the organizers will consider providing the support outlined below depending upon the content of the plan. After the Grand Finale, there will be an opportunity for the entrants and the organizers to hold practical discussions on the plans.

・ Networking with executives and technicians from startup companies in Japan and the USA

・ Multi-faceted support for establishing a company, including commercialization funding through investment

・ Building global channels for business expansion after establishment of a company

We look forward to receiving entries in i*deal Competition 2010 from as many developers and entrepreneurs as possible.
