Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce – Chamber with a difference
Grand Cayman — The Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce is not unlike its counterparts established in other countries of the free world. The Chamber is comprised of a paid membership from the Private Sector serviced by a small but dedicated team of administrators. Normal activities, not unlike those of other chambers, include: hosting trade shows and job expos, training seminars, conducting business research, having dinner meetings, sponsoring speeches and presentations on topical issues and general promotion of the business interests of its members.
However, with all the similarities, the CI Chamber of Commerce is different as it actively promotes its objective of building and improving the overall island community by novel methods. The Chamber, led for many years by it energetic and often described, visionary Chief Executive Officer Wil Pineau, strongly believes in the concept that to establish collaborative partnerships between the Private and Public Sectors is paramount for building a stronger community.
Each new annually elected Chamber President fully supports this partnering concept. Evidence and testimony of this teaming of the Chamber, a not-for-profit organization of 680 businesses and associations, and the Government is in many successful programs.
Successful joint efforts include: promotion of trade, education and business development such as the annual trade mission to Panama involving the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Tourism, The CI Investment Bureau, individual politicians and even the Governor himself; The Student Mentoring Program supported by the Ministry of Education; and “Business After Hours” by The Ministry of Agriculture used this month to promote this year’s annual Agricultural Show as well as economic development opportunities in agri-tourism.
Periodically the Department of Tourism works closely with the Chamber of Commerce on delivering customer service training and promoting major events. On an ongoing basis the government allows its workers to attend professional development workshops sponsored by the Chamber’s Professional Development and Training Centre. The Chamber also serves on several key advisory boards so that the government is aware of the views and concerns of the Chamber’s membership.
It is the aim of the Chamber of Commerce to preserve and enhance the reputation of The Cayman Islands. These islands make up a British Overseas Territory know for its financial services industries and vibrant tourism and located in the northwest Caribbean Sea next door to the USA. The Chambers wants the Cayman Islands to be a leading example of how the business community works closely with the government for the benefit of all residents.
