Major Indexes Last Week

idx_etf_sq_225px-wOctober 5, 2009 (FinancialWire) — The S&P 500 (SPX) (SNP: ^GSPC), Dow Jones Industrials (INDU) (DJI: ^DJI), NYSE Composite (NYE) (NYSE: ^NYA) and Nasdaq Composite (COMPQ) (NASDAQ: ^IXIC) all finished last Monday with percent gains ranging from the Dow’s +1.27% to the Nasdaq’s +1.87%, versus their respective closing levels from the previous Friday.  Versus the previous week’s highest overall closing marks, last week did not begin as optimistically, with all four indicators falling short by -0.34% (for the Nasdaq) to -1.55% (for the NYSE).

In fact, as last week progressed, all four indexes steadily closed lower each day, until finally ending last Friday’s session lower than the previous week’s final marks. The greatest toll fell upon the NYSE, which lost an average of -0.44% (-29.79 pts) per day, until ending the week with a total -2.18% (-148.94 pts) loss to end the week at 6,674.57 on an average daily trading volume of 5,210,080,000 units. The Nasdaq lost an average of -0.41% (-8.56 pts) per day, until ending the week with a total -2.05% (-42.81 pts) loss to end the week at 2,048.11 on an average daily trading volume of 2,349,988,000 units. The Dow lost an average of -0.37% (-35.50 pts) per day, until ending the week with a total -1.84% (-177.52 pts) loss to end the week at 9,487.67 on an average daily trading volume of 5,210,080,000 units. The S&P lost an average of -0.37% (-3.83 pts) per day, until ending the week with a total -1.84% (-19.17 pts) loss to end the week at 1,025.21 on an average daily trading volume of 5,210,080,000 units.

Last week, intra-day trading values for all four indexes peaked on Tuesday and bottomed on Friday, while the previous week had all four indexes reaching their intra-day highs on the previous Wednesday and their intra-day lows on the previous Friday. Last week’s intra-day highs fell short of the previous week’s, however last week’s intra-day lows never fell as far as the previous week’s.  Last week’s Dow intra-day high of 9,861.99 was -0.76% off the previous week’s, while its 9,378.77 intra-day low was +2.36% better than the previous week’s. Last week’s S&P intra-day high of 1,069.62 was -0.97% off the previous week’s, while its 1,019.95 low was +2.04% better than the previous week’s. Last week’s Nasdaq intra-day high of 2,141.40 was -1.21% off the previous week’s, while its 2,040.73 intra-day low was + 2.14% % better than the previous week’s. Last week’s NYSE intra-day high of 6,970.71 was -1.72% off the previous week’s, while its 6,633.98 intra-day low was + 2.42% better than the previous week’s.
