Mesothelioma-Causing Asbestos to be Removed at NYS School

In the Schuylerville school district in New York State, the schools are bustling hubs of activity. While students have returned and classes are in session, the bustling scene is made more congested by ongoing work to expand two area schools. 30 new classrooms will be added to the elementary and junior-senior high schools.

The district also has a new superintendent, 34 year old Ryan Sherman. Sherman has two kids who attend Schuylerville Elementary. Sherman told reporters that the first day of school last Thursday went very well, despite the ongoing work to the campus. "It’s a bit of inconvenience, but well worth it," he said.

An asbestos removal company worked throughout the summer to remove floor and ceiling tiles that contained the carcinogenic material from the school. The original parts of the school date back to 1955, but there have been two other renovations since then.

The asbestos laden tiles were present in 17 classrooms, the elementary library and hallways. Asbestos exposure is linked to mesothelioma, a rare but deadly form of cancer. The asbestos removal work cost $346,000 to complete, according to Michael Jacobs of the Pike Co., a general contractor on site.

The entire cost of the project including asbestos removal is $15.5 million. The project will ultimately add 50,000 square feet to the elementary school, and 11,000 square feet to the junior-senior high school. The schools are composed of children from families in seven townships in Saratoga and Washington counties.

Another project that is upcoming will be the renovation of the 650-seat auditorium. All the seats have been removed, and will be replaced with new cushions later this year. "The goal is to maintain the original look because they were nice, they’re just worn," Jacobs said.
