Memphis, TN—A school bus crash in Shelby County left a mother dead, and her son injured after their car hit the school bus head-on. The fatal collision happened on Tuesday afternoon, September 8, 2009 around 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of Hacks Cross Road and Shelby Drive, as reported by the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Police reports indicated, a Shelby County school bus was traveling eastbound on Shelby Drive, and was attempting to make a left turn onto Hacks Cross Road, when a 1996 Mazda 626 traveling westbound on Shelby Drive slammed into the bus head-on. The school bus reportedly did not have any students on board when the crash occurred. The driver of the Mazda, Treneice Shotwell, 37, of Memphis, was tragically killed in the collision. Shotwell’s 14-year-old son was seriously injured, and was transported by area emergency medical services (EMS) crews to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Police officials stated the occupants of the Mazda were not wearing their seatbelts. The Shelby County school bus driver, Willie Walker, 64, of Memphis, was reportedly not injured in the wreck. Walker was wearing his seatbelt. The fatal crash is currently under investigation by police officials, and no charges have been filed at this time.
