Santa Barbara, CA--The pilot of a small airplane traveling with two passengers was forced to make an emergency crash landing on California’s 101 freeway on Sunday morning as reported by KTLA news. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) http://www.faa.gov officials confirmed the Piper PA-24 Comanche ran out of gas one mile northeast of the Santa Barbara Airport causing the pilot to land in the southbound lanes of the 101 around 10:36 a.m., in the middle of busy Sunday morning traffic.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers stated three automobile drivers were unable to avoid the aircraft wreckage strewn on the California freeway and struck the small plane. The pilot and his two passengers departed 180 miles away from the crash site at an airport in Temecula and then ran out of gas which forced the pilot ditch the plane on the 101, just outside of their final destination of the Santa Barbara Airport. The 101 freeway has reopened after Santa Barbara area firefighters were forced to close down certain lanes to clear the aviation accident wreckage. Reports indicate the plane’s pilot and two passengers survived the plane crash and the drivers and passengers of the cars who struck the aircraft also survived.
