Construction and Asbestos Abatement Projects Completed in Illinois
In Mount Vernon, Illinois, summer construction and asbestos removal projects at two local schools have been completed. Two major construction projects took place this summer at the Casey Middle School and the Dr. Andy Hall School.
"The contractors are supposed to be done today," District 80 Assistant Superintendent Dr. Tyler Brown said last Monday. "Now we’re trying to get everything put back together."
The project at Casey Middle School included the removal of asbestos, a material that can be deadly. Those exposed to asbestos have an elevated risk of developing lung cancer, asbestosis, or mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, is considered by many to be almost solely caused by asbestos exposure. No cure exists for this cancer, but palliative treatments, such as surgery or chemotherapy may prolong the life of some patients.
In the Casey school, the asbestos was present in the floor tiles. Other work at the school included the installation of new interior doors and windows, as well as tile replacement and the installation of dropped ceilings. The total cost of these projects was $1.2 million. The window and door replacement portion of the project was the most expensive portion.
According to Brown, the summer construction project will translate into big savings this winter. Superintendent Brown says that the school district expects that the projects will enable them to save $30,000 in energy costs.
Teachers moved back into their classrooms last Monday, and their first full day of work was last Thursday. Classes began earlier today.
