August 14, 2009 (FinancialWire) — Martek Biosciences Corp. (NASDAQ: MATK) said it has entered into a multi-year sole-source supply agreement with Puleva Food for the use of  infant formulas produced by Puleva and sold in Spain.

Puleva is part of the Spain-based Ebro-Puleva group, an agro-food business.

ARA, or arachidonic acid, is a fatty acid that is naturally present in human breast milk. According to Martek, studies have demonstrated numerous benefits, including improved mental and visual development, for infants receiving infant formula supplemented with ARA and DHA another fatty acid.

Columbia, Maryland-based Martek’s blend of DHA and ARA, life’sDHA & life’sARA, are used in U.S. infant formula. Martek is a global supplier of DHA and ARA.
