Historical Virginia Building to Undergo Renovations

In Danville, Virginia, the renovation of the White Mill building is expected to beautify the area, while creating new jobs at the same time. The White Mill is located alongside the Dan River, and was once home to Dan River Fabrics, and is also known as the No. 8 Mill. The building was damaged during a tornado back in 2004. Now, the building that once symbolized the downfall of the local economy seems poised to become a beacon for hope in these troubling economic times.

Over the next 12 to 18 months, workers will begin the process of renovating the building. This will include the removal of lead paint and asbestos. Asbestos exposure is linked to lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

Once the building has been repaired and renovated, and the asbestos has been removed, the building is slated to become a place of employment for 400 workers. Asbestos removal work will also create new jobs during the renovation process.

The workers will be employed by a technology center, which supplies software developers with secure data storage. The White Mill was “built stoutly” and is “well suited to be used for that purpose,” said John Gieser of Gibbs International, the entity which bought the building.

The fiber optic system slated to be part of the structure is making people in the area very happy. “It’s takes a team effort to make good things happen in the city of Danville,” Mayor Sherman Saunders said of the project. The fiber optics will ensure high speed internet access.
