June 22, 2009 (FinancialWire) — MasterCard Inc. (NYSE: MA) has appointed Ajay Banga as its president and chief operating officer, reporting to Robert W. Selander, who currently serves as president and chief executive officer.

Banga is currently Citigroup’s (NYSE: C) chief executive officer of Citi Asia Pacific, responsible for all of Citi’s business lines in the region including credit cards and consumer banking, institutional banking, wealth management and alternative investments.

He is also a member of the company’s senior leadership and executive committees.

Selander will continue to serve as CEO after Banga joins MasterCard on August 31.

At MasterCard, Banga will be responsible for various business operations including customer relationships globally in international and U.S. markets, products, services, marketing, technology and operations. The company’s finance, human resources, and law and franchise integrity functions will continue to report to Selander.

Purchase, New York-based MasterCard develops and markets payment solutions, processes around 21 billion transactions each year, and provides analysis and consulting services to financial-institution customers and merchants.

The company’s brands include MasterCard, Maestro and Cirrus.
