Asbestos Tests Negative at Patchogue-Medford Schools

The Patchogue-Medford school district asbestos crisis seems to be over. The district superintendent announced yesterday that air-quality tests conducted at both Eagle Elementary and Oregon Middle schools showed that the air was safe for students. Asbestos, a toxic material, is linked to medical conditions ranging from asbestosis to lung cancer to mesothelioma.

Attendance has been down at both schools since news of possible asbestos releases became public knowledge. District Superintendent Michael Mostow hopes with air-quality testing complete, parents who had kept their children home will feel confident in the safety of the school. “We hope everybody comes to school - enough of this,” said Mostow. Last night, a group of concerned parents met as a committee to review the results of the air quality tests. The chairman of the group plans to issue a formal letter to parents to assure them that the school is safe for their children.

The asbestos scandal at Eagle Elementary began two weeks ago, after a video was given to a local news station that showed footage of the alleged asbestos problems facing the school. It was later revealed that the video, while it did contain footage of some safely intact asbestos insulation, contained a great deal of footage that showed harmless fiberglass insulation.

Mostow has been highly critical of Cablevision News 12, the station that broadcast the footage, blaming them for creating “a sense of hysteria.” At Oregon, the district sealed off a classroom after one teacher reported a small puncture in an asbestos floor tile.
