School Asbestos Fears Addressed
School district officials have addressed concerns about asbestos in a Medford area elementary school.
Mesothelioma Cancer News (Medford, New York) – Officials from the Patchogue-Medford school district in New York held a meeting this week to address concerns regarding asbestos in an elementary school. As reported by NewsDay.com, the officials sought to reassure the safety of Eagle Elementary School, after 630 students failed to show up for classes Tuesday due to fears about asbestos contamination.
As noted in the report, over 300 individuals were in attendance to hear state and local authorities remark on the school’s condition. Brendan Broderick, an air quality consulting firm representative, is quoted in the report as stating at the meeting, “For the most part, it's all in good condition, not releasing fibers into the air.”
Many were critical of the actions of officials in not informing them earlier of a possible issue. Lisa Welch, who has two middle school children and a sister who teaches at the Eagle school, is quoted by NewsDay as stating, “You ripped up that classroom. That's my sister's classroom. This is personal.”
