Solving Great Riddles On The Beach Near Santa Monica Pier

(MMD Newswire) May 11, 2009 -- As a young boy of 11, Einstein wrote that he wanted "to solve the riddle of the great world."

Despite unprecedented efforts, he fell short. The enterprise demands higher levels of generality than even Einstein scaled, and a stronger rigor than science employs.

The task is philosophy's. Modern science is a philosophical methodology, but the solution emerges not within the approximations of the sciences, the assumptions of mathematics, or the beliefs and faiths of religions, but at the limit of rigorous representation.

On May 14, 2009, 8-10 PM, on the beach adjacent to California's Santa Monica Pier, three books will be published, in the sand, in their entirety.

To the limit of rigor.

Written in numbered, rhyming aphorisms of unusual concentration and breadth, the letters and words will be formed from objects configured in the sand.

At water's edge, at low tide, in the moist ground,

T LITE BOOK BY THE SEA (2009)

will be presented in tea lights patterned to concentric arcs directed to the south. The depiction echoes string theory and other accounts of creation, but also invokes a verse from the philosophical epic poem, The Books of Joshua (2008):

"And then a girl from Oz appeared, and waved her magic wand-a second muse to guide him to enchantment and beyond. She taught him how to read the patterns in a rippled pond, as at the moment of creation, and every moment on."

For

SHELLS' YELLS TO PEBBLES' REBELS: THAT CERTAINTY SELLS (2009),

shells and pebbles enhanced with florescent paint will configure the text in a hemi-Limaçon of Pascal to the north of the pier.

The northern arm of the limaçon will lead to a large Spiral of Archimedes occupying the wide expanse of beach further north. Glow sticks will be arrayed to form the complete contents of

LAND OF GLOWING SAND: CLOSE AT HAND (2009).

Covering two football fields. After sunset. Aglow in the sand. Poetry. Art. Philosophy. To the limit of rigor. To "solve the riddle of the great world."
