United Airlines Reduces Mexico Flights
May 4, 2009 (FinancialWire) — UAL Corp.’s (NASDAQ: UAUA) United Airlines unit said it would temporary reduce the amount of its weekly roundtrip flights between the U.S. and Mexico from 61 to 24 in May and from 90 to 52 in June, starting on May 5. The airline joins several other big U.S. carriers, who have made similar cutbacks due to an outbreak of swine flu outbreak in Mexico.
Chicago-based United, which has less than two percent of its consolidated capacity dedicated to Mexico, said it would continue to serve all four of its year-round destinations in Mexico, including Cancun, Los Cabos, Mexico City, and Puerto Vallarta.
The U.S. carrier with offering the most flights to Mexico, Houston-based Continental Airlines will cut the number of seats if offers to the country by 50%. Delta Air Lines also said it would cut its service to Mexico.
United COO John Tague said that the airline is making the cuts based on reduced traveler demand for service to Mexico.
Fifteen people have died from swine-flu in Mexico since the outbreak began, according to reports by health officials. There has been one confirmed fatality in the U.S. At least one United Airlines employee, a ramp worker based in Denver, is battling the disease, according to an AP report.
