Bunge Buys Mid-Atlantic Vegetable Shortening Assets
April 27, 2009 (FinancialWire) — Bunge Ltd.’s (NYSE: BG) operating arm has purchased the assets of Mid-Atlantic Vegetable Shortening, Inc. an edible oil packaging business that services bakery, food processor and foodservice customers in the Northeastern United States.
Kearny, New Jersey-based Mid-Atlantic is packages liquid oils, shortenings, margarines and butter blends made from a variety of oils. Mid-Atlantic also packages re-hydrated garlic and other spice products.
Bunge executive Rodney Perry said, “Purchasing Mid-Atlantic’s assets enables Bunge to increase our oil and shortening packaging capacity in the Northeastern corridor, which is the country’s largest edible oil market.”
The company said it plans to retain a majority of the employees currently working at the plant including Calvin and Perry Theobald, two founders of Mid-Atlantic.
White Plains, New York-based Bunge is a vertically integrated food and feed ingredient company, supplying raw and processed agricultural commodities and specialized food ingredients to a range of customers in the livestock, poultry, food processor, foodservice and bakery industries.
Bunge operates grain elevators, oilseed processing plants, edible oil refineries and packaging facilities, and corn dry mills in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
