PepsiCo Buys Peruvian Snack Maker

April 17, 2009 (FinancialWire) — PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE: PEP) said that it has acquired Peru-based Karinto S.A.C., a maker of snack food.

Karinto makes corn chips under the Los Cuates, as well as a line of nuts and seeds. Karinto and its manufacturing partner Bocaditos Nacionales S.A. were founded together in Lima in 1968, and the companies have been focused on corn-based snacks.

Their portfolio includes Fripapas and Papi Frits potato chips and a range of nutritious snacks, including seeds, raisins, mixed nuts and a peanut brand. PepsiCo said that the acquisition includes both companies, including two manufacturing plants in Lima, and all of their brands.

PepsiCo said that the transaction reflects the company’slong-term commitment to invest in South America. It follows the company’s recent acquisition of Brazilian snack company Comercio de Doces Lucky Ltda.

Purchase, New York-based PepsiCo is a food and beverage company that employs around 198,000 people and sells its products in around 200 countries. The company’s principal businesses include Frito-Lay snacks, Pepsi-Cola beverages, Gatorade sports drinks, Tropicana juices and Quaker foods.
